Meet Katie!

April 2, 2012 |  by  |  Mikado Events  |  No Comments  |  Share

Happy April! The calendars say First Day of Spring is in March but to me, the spring doesn’t really arrive until we officially get into the month of April. That’s when the busy wedding season starts up and we definitely have a lot on our plate this year – especially since a lot of couples are tying the knot during the Year of the Dragon. We have a lot of exciting things happening and hopefully we’ll be able to share them soon. In the meantime, I wanted to introduce everyone to our new 2012 intern, Katie!

I am currently studying at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for my Hospitality and Tourism Management degree. It has been a dream of mine for awhile to become a wedding planner and spend a lot of my time watching and reading about the wedding world. TV shows such as Say Yes to the Dress and magazines as the Knot and Brides showcase different aspects of a wedding. All allow a look at the beautiful ceremonies, dresses, and flowers, but they also delve deeper into couples’ lives. Every couple is special with every detail, from favor choice to color schemes, is a beautiful representation of them. As much as I would like to say weddings are my only passion, I do have a few others. I am buff when it comes to movies and music, with my likes ranging from romance to thriller; country to pop. I love to dance and continue my passion from my former studio days out at school, with a few non-major classes. However, one of biggest loves and hobbies is make-up, practicing on others or doing my own, getting ready is something I look forward to. I could not be more excited to have joined the team here at Mikado Weddings and anticipate a wonderful season.

Our awesome 2011 intern, Kelsey, teaches a career development class at Umass Amherst and recommended Katie because of her interest in the wedding industry. Welcome aboard Katie!

Meet Kelsey!

We would love to introduce our newest addition to the MW team: Kelsey!

Kelsey was a top candidate with her ambitious drive to learn more about the wedding planning industry. We were drawn to Kelsey’s enthusiasm, strong communication skills, and desire to help others – even if it meant running around the streets of New York City to help a bride  find replacement tights!

Hey everyone! I’m Kelsey the new intern for Mikado Weddings. This fall, I will be going into my senior year at UMass Amherst. There I study Hospitality and Tourism Management with a concentration in Event Planning. I just got back from a semester abroad where I spent four amazing months in Sevilla, Spain. Studying abroad was by far the best decision I have ever made in my life! Being abroad made me realize how in love with Boston I am and how lucky I am to call it home. I am your typical Boston girl, I say wicked more than anyone should and love everything about Boston sports. I am beyond obsessed with hockey, which surprises a lot of people since I am such a girlie girl. My favorite things usually contain some sort of sparkles and/or cheetah print. That’s just a little about me. I look forward to a busy summer filled with endless sunshine and weddings! I can’t wait to spend all summer surrounded in this field of wedding planning that I have fallen in love with!

Kelsey – We’re so glad to have you on board! Looking forward to a great year with you!

Bridal Expo 2011

January 17, 2011 |  by  |  Bridal Events, Centerpieces, DIY, Mikado Events  |  1 Comment  |  Share

On Sunday, January 9th, 2011, Mikado Weddings attended the Bridal Expo at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.  We were one of the wedding vendors that showcased the services that we provide to brides and their wedding party.  We started our day bright an early at 9am to set up our booth which we shared with A Healthy Balance, a fitness group that is located in Quincy, Ma.

There were many different elements to our table.  Days before the event, we gathered a bunch of DIY project ideas we had for the booth.  One of the bigger projects was making the easel to hold up our sign.  First, we purchased 3 long wooden planks about 2.5 inches wide and drilled holes in the tops to hold them all together with a screw.  When we finished building the easel, we painted it a neutral gray to enhance the color of the wood.

Another fun and cost effective DIY project we worked on was putting together a beautiful, seasonally appropriate centerpiece.  Since the weather provided us with an abundance of sticks and branches outside, we figured we could use that to our advantage.  After picking out the perfect branch, Lian painted it gray and sprinkled silver glitter on it and left it to air dry.  Michelle used a vase that she had in her home and filled it with pink tissue paper that she crinkled into little balls.  She also bought pink crystals that had little strings attached to them from Michaels to hang onto the branches.  Michelle had been working on another DIY project for her own wedding and was experimenting with Martha Stewart’s paper roses.  She made enough to place around the rim of the vase.  On the morning of the event, we placed all the pieces together and made a beautiful, soft and wintry centerpiece for our table.

Day of Coordination/Bridal Bootcamp Raffle Ticket

Every bride and her party that visited our booth was offered a raffle ticket that will allow them a chance to win a free “Day of Coordination” package from Mikado Weddings, along with a Bridal Bootcamp from A Healthy Balance.  Each person that filled out a raffle ticket was able to take a personalized Mikado Weddings pen as a gift and each bride was given a special gift of their own.

A BIG congratulations to Elizabeth Earle for winning the raffle ticket! We cannot wait to help and assist you on your big day!

DIY Sash

November 17, 2010 |  by  |  DIY, Mikado Events  |  No Comments  |  Share

In one of our most recent events, the Asian Boston International Model Competition, we took on the task of making sashes for the winners and runners up. Angel, Lian and I got together for an arts and crafts session, and with the three of us bouncing ideas off each other and working together the work seemed almost effortless.

In order to get things started, we needed supplies. The sashes which included the glitter glue were bought from iParty and the marker Sharpies were bought from a local CVS. We had some stencils around and used them to trace the letters. Of course stencils could also be found at your local arts and craft store or even a Staples.

We started off by stenciling the words onto the sash in pencil to avoid mistakes.

Next, we colored in the letters with gold Sharpies for the 1st place winners and silver sharpies for the runners up.

Lastly, we outlined the letters with the glitter glue provided as part of the sash kit we bought to give it a little more detail to our design.

And in no time, these are our finished products.

DIY projects are not only wallet-friendly, but they add that personal touch people appreciate to your special event. So gather your girlfriends, let loose and get creative!

A│B Fashion Model Competition

November 1, 2010 |  by  |  Mikado Events  |  No Comments  |  Share

We were the Event Planners and proud sponsors of the Asian Boston Magazine2010 Fashion Supermodel Competition at Mantra in Boston. This fashion show was definitely a lot of hard work given the limited amount of time we had to put everything together and trying to coordinate details with 30 models, 25 sponsors, and 3 designers. But it was a lot of fun, the final outcome was amazing, and the collaboration of everyone to make this event possible was phenomenal!

Before photo of Mantra as the Mikado Events team begins to setup at 10am.

Runway stage from Rentals Unlimited. Talk about crisis moments – the main street leading to Mantra was blocked off because of construction and there were no detour streets since everything in Downtown Boston is basically a one-way. We had to direct the Rentals Unlimited truck to backup the entire one way street just so we could have the stage setup in time for the rehearsal.

Setup of judges table with custom created scorecard ballots. Event judges included VIP Sponsors from Sunshine Travel, Mohegan Sun, C Mart Supermarkets, and celebrity judge, Artie Wahlberg.

Sponsors of the night for the Fashion Model Competition: Dresses for the models by Drea Designs, SooDee on Newbury Street, and Kim’s Fashion; limo service provided by 128 Coach; airline tickets for the winners provided by Sunshine Travel and Delta Airlines.

Hair and make-up provided by an entire Paul Mitchell team.

This event was hosted in conjunction with the annual International Fashion Supermodels Finals Competition in Los Angeles. Two winners from the night – Nomin Ganbold and Lily Chow – were selected to head to LA  to compete with models from all over the world! We also had the honor of having Miss Malaysia Universe 2008, Levy Li, co-host the show with Tony Yee of Chinatown Main Street. Good luck to our Oct 17th winners in LA!

A special thank you to the Asian Boston Magazine staff (Leo Anthony, Tony Yee, Helen Chu, Angel Lak) and our Mikado Events team and helpers (Angel, Diana, Joanna, and Nancy).
